In compliance with the amendments to the “Agriculture and Rural Development Law”, which were announced by the President of Latvia on February 23, 2024 and which will enter into force on March 8, 2024, on Tuesday, March 5, the government approved the Cabinet of Ministers regulations prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), setting agricultural and fodder products from Russia and Belarus, as well as from other third countries, prohibited for importation into Latvia, if the relevant products are of Russian or Belarus origin.
As Russia’s border country, Latvia is trying to achieve the fastest possible severing of economic ties with the aggressor country, and this Latvian initiative to ban the import of agricultural and fodder products from Russia and Belarus, as well as from other third countries, if the relevant products are of Russian or Belarusian origin, is an additional element to the common EU sanctions policy.
Taking into account the above-mentioned information, decisions have been made that reflect the common values of the Latvian state, without affecting its development. The import ban applies to:
- for all vegetables (products mentioned in Regulation No. 2658/87* in Chapter 7 of Part II, Section II of Annex I);
- for all fruits, berries and nuts (products mentioned in Regulation No. 2658/87 in Annex I, Part Two, Section II, Chapter 8);
- for all cereals (products mentioned in Regulation No. 2658/87 in Annex I, Part Two, Section II, Chapter 10);
- fodder raw materials and finished fodder (products mentioned in Chapter 23 of Part II, Section IV of Regulation No. 2658/87).
“Rules on agricultural and fodder products prohibited for import into Latvia” will enter into force on March 8 and will be published in the official publication “Latvijas Vēstnesis”, while the informative report “On the import of Russian agricultural and food products into Latvia” was heard and accepted by the government.
